Get More Out of Your Browser
Whether you use Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, your browser is probably your most-used application. Yet most people stick to the basics: open tab, type URL, scroll. There's a surprising amount of built-in functionality that can make your entire digital day smoother.
1. Use the Address Bar as a Calculator
Type a math equation directly into your browser's address bar (or search bar) and press Enter. Most browsers and search engines will return the answer instantly — no need to open a calculator app.
2. Reopen a Closed Tab Instantly
Accidentally closed a tab? Press Ctrl + Shift + T (Windows/Linux) or Cmd + Shift + T (Mac) to reopen the most recently closed tab. You can keep pressing it to reopen multiple closed tabs in order.
3. Search Within a Specific Website
In your address bar, type site:example.com your search term to search only within that website. This is especially useful when a site's own search tool is poor.
4. Pin Your Most-Used Tabs
Right-click any tab and select "Pin Tab." Pinned tabs stay at the left side of your tab bar, take up less space, and survive browser restarts. Perfect for email, calendars, or project management tools you always have open.
5. Use Keyboard Shortcuts for Tab Navigation
- Ctrl/Cmd + T — Open a new tab
- Ctrl/Cmd + W — Close current tab
- Ctrl/Cmd + Tab — Cycle through open tabs
- Ctrl/Cmd + L — Jump to the address bar
6. Mute Noisy Tabs in One Click
If a tab is playing audio, a small speaker icon appears on it. Click it to mute that tab immediately — no need to hunt for the play/pause button on the page itself.
7. Drag Links to a New Tab
Middle-click any hyperlink to open it in a new background tab without leaving the current page. Alternatively, hold Ctrl/Cmd while clicking a link for the same effect.
8. Use Reading Mode for Distraction-Free Articles
Safari has a built-in Reading View (click the lines icon in the address bar). Firefox has one too. Edge and Chrome offer similar features via extensions. This strips away ads, sidebars, and clutter, leaving only the text.
9. Zoom In and Out with Your Keyboard
Press Ctrl/Cmd + "+" to zoom in and Ctrl/Cmd + "-" to zoom out. Ctrl/Cmd + 0 resets to default zoom. Handy when text is too small or a site isn't mobile-responsive.
10. Use Multiple Profiles for Work and Personal Browsing
Most modern browsers support multiple user profiles. Create one for work and one for personal use. Each has its own bookmarks, extensions, saved passwords, and browsing history — keeping things neatly separated.
